Thank you, and farewell to Professor Philip Weinstein

April 03, 2025

Professor Philip Weinstein, whose impactful tenure has left an indelible mark on the Nature Foundation, has decided to step down from the Board after six years as Deputy Chair.

Phil was elected to the Nature Foundation Board in 2018. As Deputy Chair, Phil shifted the organisation's science strategy from process-focused to outcomes-focused, prioritising quantifiable biodiversity gains. This is a crucial pillar of our work as we strive to maximise our impact with our available resources.

Phil played a vital role in launching several significant scientific initiatives, including the first Nature Foundation Science Strategy, a major Australian Research Council grant in collaboration with the University of New South Wales to address overgrazing management, establishing a partnership with Yundi Nature Conservancy to develop more cost-effective biodiversity assessment methods using remote sensing, and realigning our research investment with our organisational knowledge needs has been invaluable.

During his term, Phil's expertise as a leading scientist and Director has made him an exceptionally valuable contributor to Nature Foundation.

The Board and I thank Phil for his service and wish him all the best in the next chapter of his life.

Jan Ferguson OAM, Board Chair, Nature Foundation
